Stillwater senior Jessica Fahlenkamp became the first Lady Pioneer to reach 200 career blocks Thursday, then ended a Senior Night sweep of Sapulpa with the match-winning kill at Pioneer Fieldhouse.
Stillwater won 25-20, 25-10, 29-27 to improve to 11-15. Fahlenkamp, a middle blocker, finished with five blocks and six kills.
Fahlenkamp broke the school's career varsity blocks record Aug. 22, passing the mark of 175 set by Laura Mullen from 1999 to 2001. She entered Thursday's match at 199. Her five blocks against the Chieftains put her at 204.
"She did get to her 200 tonight," head coach Drue Brown said. "She was on fire."
The 200th
The milestone came early in the first set. Fahlenkamp's block was Stillwater's third point of the night to cut Sapulpa's early lead to 6-3. Her teammates and the public-address announcer marked the moment, sparking loud applause from home spectators.

Brown and assistant coach Chesnie Caudill presented Fahlenkamp with a commemorative volleyball for the record. Brown also gave her an OK Preps 200 Block Club sticker from iwasatthegame.com.
The record counts varsity blocks only. Brown said Fahlenkamp played about half of her sophomore season around injuries before starting full time as a junior and senior.
"So really, it's two and a half years' worth of blocks she broke the record in," Brown said. "So it's a really impressive record that she has set. I mean, season's not over. She's at 204, 205 now, and I can see her taking it to 215. She's that type of player."
Fahlenkamp also holds the school's single-match blocks record, Brown said.

How it unfolded
Sapulpa controlled the early part of the first set, leading 8-3 and 12-6. Stillwater answered with four straight points to pull within 12-10, and a Sadie Moore (19) ace tied it at 13. Sophomore Brooklyn Berger (13) followed with a kill for the Lady Pioneers' first lead since 1-0. Stillwater outscored Sapulpa 19-8 after trailing 12-6, and freshman Prentiss Martin (1) closed the set with an ace.
The second set was never close. Stillwater opened on a 3-0 run, and Patterson served back-to-back aces to make it 12-4. A five-point run pushed the lead to 20-8, and Patterson finished the 25-10 set with a kill.
The third set was tied 16 times. Stillwater jumped out to a 5-1 lead before Sapulpa scored five straight to go ahead 6-5. From there, neither team led by more than two points.

Stillwater had match point at 24-23 and again at 25-24 after a kill by sophomore Lydia Matlock (10), but Sapulpa answered both times and earned a set point of its own at 26-25. The Lady Pioneers erased it, and Matlock's kill made it 27-26. After Sapulpa tied it again, Berger put Stillwater back in front, and Fahlenkamp ended the match with a kill. It was her fourth kill of the third set.
"She played her rear end off tonight," Brown said.
Key performances
Berger led Stillwater with 12 kills. Patterson added 10 kills and two aces, and Matlock had nine kills and a block.
Moore, a junior, ran the offense with 29 assists, two aces, and a block. Martin led the defense with 11 digs, along with two aces and three assists. Junior Kael Valdois (2) had seven digs and two aces.
Stillwater finished with 40 kills, 10 aces, and seven blocks.

Senior Night
Stillwater honored four seniors before the match: Fahlenkamp, Reagan Bell (17), Emma Cantu (8), and Kinley Eller (4). All four played in their final home match at Pioneer Fieldhouse. Eller had a kill, two aces, and three digs. Bell added two kills, and Cantu had three digs.
Brown said every class gets harder to see leave. He teaches in Stillwater and has known most of the seniors since they came through the program in middle school.

"Every year of me spending another year with them, they become family," Brown said. "These girls hang out with my children and my wife. And so it's more than just us playing volleyball. It's a lot more than just wins and losses."
"At the end of the day, I love every single one of these seniors and what they do for our program and the foundation they've set," he said. "It's just amazing, and it trickles down. So the next year, the bar is set, and we know what to do."

Next in line
Matlock may be the next to chase the record, Brown said, though he called it a tough bar to reach. Matlock and Fahlenkamp share the middle and are close off the court.
"They're middle blocker buddies," Brown said. "They practice together. They play together. I think Lydia really looks up to Jess."
Brown said Fahlenkamp would want to see Matlock break the record someday because she "has always been more about team success than about individual success."

Matlock returned Thursday from an injury that had kept her out since Aug. 22 against Norman, and she finished with nine kills.
"She's a great player," Brown said. "I think having her back helped a little bit, just for us trying to get back into the flow of some stuff we did."
Stepping in
Moore has moved into the role of the team's lone setter — running what is known as a 5-1 offense — since freshman Kendall Gillum went down with a leg injury. Brown said Moore, a hitter by trade, took on the job without hesitation.
"She stepped up big and just said, 'I'll do what I need to do for the team,'" Brown said.

Brown also credited Caudill, who called the offense and serves Thursday.
"I would say the offensive game plan, as you saw, was just flawlessly executed," Brown said. "Those assistant coaches don't get as much love. So a shout-out to Chesnie for her game plan and what she had tonight in our offense."
Brown pointed to the schedule when asked about the record. Stillwater plays in the Frontier Valley Conference with Bixby, Union, Owasso, and Jenks, which he called the toughest conference in Oklahoma.
Stillwater closes the regular season on the road. The Lady Pioneers play at Sand Springs at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, then visit Bishop Kelley in Tulsa at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, on the Comets' Senior Night.
