There was mostly good, some bad, but overall a promising first day for Oklahoma State.
Through one day of the 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, the Cowboys are in fourth place in the team race with 25 points, trailing first-place Penn State by 15.5, second-place Nebraska by 2 and third-place Iowa by 0.5. While there’s little doubt as to which team will clinch first place, another top-three finish remains firmly within grasp for the Cowboys.
OSU finished the first day with a 17-3 record in bouts through the first two rounds. Six of those wins came in bonus-point fashion — two of which came from freshman 133-pounder Jax Forrest. Seven wrestlers advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal round, which begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. central standard time. Three — freshman 165-pounder Dee Lockett, Alex Facundo at 174 and Zack Ryder at 184 — dropped to the consolation brackets in their respective weight classes.

At 125, fifth-seeded Troy Spratley neutralized a three-match losing skid to 12th-seeded Vincent Robinson of North Carolina State, clinching an 8-5 decision. Trailing 4-0 midway through the second period, Spratley countered a shot from Robinson and swiftly turned it into a takedown. Moments later, he flipped Robinson onto his back, securing four near-fall points and an advantage he wouldn’t come close to surrendering. And in a rematch of the 125-pound title match of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Spratley had attained vengeance.
At 133, the top-seeded Forrest ended his bout in 1:16 of match time — less than his 2-minute pin in the first round — with a 16-1 tech fall against 17-seed T.K. David of Gardner Webb. Forrest bullied his way to another bonus-point win, courtesy of two swift takedowns and 10 combined nearfall points.
Second-seeded 141-pounder Sergio Vega had built a 7-1 lead into the third period, but he didn’t settle. Instead, he went for the jugular. He worked 15-seed Elijah Griffin of Rider into a cradle, before placing him firmly on his back. Moments later, a pin was finalized.
The Cowboys earned decisions from Casey Swiderski at 149 and Landon Robideau at 157, before Dee Lockett (165) lost via pin to 12-seed Cesar Alvan of Columbia in sudden victory. Alex Facundo (174) and Zack Ryder (184) also dropped their bouts, before Cody Merrill (197) got OSU back in the win column with a 2-1 decision against 10-seed Mac Stout of Pittsburgh.
One bout later, 7-seed Konner Doucet ended the day with a 4-1 decision against 10-seed David Szuba of Arizona State.
