David Taylor didn’t shy away from reality a week ago during his weekly media availability.
When asked about his thoughts on West Virginia’s team makeup, the Oklahoma State coach spoke bluntly — early matches would decide the trajectory of Sunday’s dual. And losses in early weights could favor the Mountaineers in the momentum game.
On Sunday, however, No. 5 OSU dominated those early weights, en route to a 34-3 win against the No. 17 Mountaineers at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown.
Outside of a lone blemish from freshman Ronnie Ramirez at 133 in a 4-2 loss to 19th-ranked Gunner Andrick of West Virginia, the Cowboys (7-1) were on cruise control for most of the day. They clinched nine of 10 bouts on the day, logging two wins in bonus-point fashion.
Now, Taylor and Co. will shift their focus ahead to a clash with No. 6 Nebraska on December 22 in Lincoln. But for now, the satisfaction of Sunday’s dominant outing will suffice.
Here are three takeaways from the dual.
Spratley gets revenge on Strickenberger
A year ago, West Virginia’s Jett Strickenberger had Troy Spratley deciphered.
First, in a sudden pin of Spratley in the first period of the 125-pound bout in a January dual in Stillwater. And again in the title match at 125 of the Big 12 Wrestling Championships in Tulsa, a bout Strickenberger clinched via a 5-2 decision in sudden victory.
This time, the 8th-ranked Spratley flipped the script in a 6-2 decision against No. 7 Strickenberger. An early takedown, flashy reversal in the second period and stellar defense gave Spratley his vengeance, and perhaps most importantly, a fitting ending to the day for the Cowboys.

Doucet flashing offensive development
Heading into the season, questions loomed over OSU’s heavyweight starter.
Instead of shopping in the transfer portal, Taylor opted to stick with former starter Konner Doucet. Pundits and fans expressed uncertainty, especially after Doucet was benched in favor of eventual heavyweight national champion Wyatt Hendrickson — who transferred to OSU from Air Force — a season ago. But so far, Doucet has put any uncertainty to rest.
He’s attempting more shots, has been better on bottom and as Taylor said in November, has wrestled with “more tenacity.” And that didn’t change Sunday when Doucet logged his first pin of the season, forcing West Virginia’s Wilson Spires into a precarious position less than 2 minutes into the opening period of the bout. At one point Sunday, an ESPN color commentator even stated, “Konner Doucet looks like he’s wrestling angry.”
Throughout the year, Doucet has flashed a steady dose of offense. Defense has always been a specialty. But now, his offensive improvement has highlighted his sixth-year campaign.

Facundo continues hot stretch
A week ago, Taylor shed light on 174-pounder Alex Facundo’s recent success after a sluggish start to the season.
That was on display again in No. 14 Facundo’s 20-5 tech fall against West Virginia’s (5-2) Leo Conito. Facundo dominated from the start, posting six takedowns and bullying his way to a bonus-point win.
Facundo has now recorded three tech falls over his past four matches. And that momentum will need to carry over amid a showdown with No. 6 Christopher Minto of Nebraska in less than a week.
